My obsession for owls started when I was a little girl. In the mid 70s, it wasn't easy to make ends meet for many, not to mention to buy something extra.
I remembered my grandmother will buy cockles for us on some Sunday mornings. My aunt will boil the water to pour over the cockles to roughly cook it. My cousin, Angela will prepare the chilli sauce for dipping. My grandmother will be washing the cockles. Our rediffusion will be playing loudly, many times 'mama lemon' is on the air. I will be the busiest one watching and waiting to eat. it's very exciting. Almost everyone is in the little kitchen. Those were my Sundays. Once awhile, we had to off the fridge to let the ice melts else the whole tray will be wrapped with solid ice.
One morning, I decided to keep the shells of the bigger cockles to make owls. After washing them several times, I decided to sun them for awhile. the next tough thing is to save some money to buy the super glue. (Even in late 70s or early80s, super glue is consider expensive to us) Finally, I designed a pair of owls, one with wing slightly open n one with head tilted. I remembered I glue the eyes on but cannot recalled how or where I got them. I tied little red ribbons on them too. They become my proud first diy. My grandma allowed me to displayed them on the tv cabinet. They stand proudly on the front. I was really proud of it.
One day, our old neighbour came to visit my grandma with her little grandson. The little boy couldn't stay still and need a lot of attention . when he opened the cabinet door, i told him nicely not to do so, but his grandma never stop him. Then he took out my owls, I was a little upset and watching him closely. but never do nor say anything. just stared at him. Suddenly he dropped my owls and broke them. I was really angry. I slammed my door loudly and stayed inside the room until they left. I was sure I didn't handle the situation well, but I was merely 13 or 14 then. til today, I still missed those owls.
Today, my owls filled my house almost every corner, except my children's room
