3 days in Penang - Day 1

2017-3-9,Thursday

We had planned a 4 days trip to Penang, but the " 大头虾  "(big head prawn) me only realised that my daughter's 过大礼 (pre-wedding gifts exchange) is on our fourth day. Thanks for the cheap airfare, we easily booked another one way return ticket to return on the 3rd day instead. It cost us additional S$21 each but saved a night's hotel too.

Let's go.

Jetstar 3K671, 1040-1205 (Terminal 1)

it's a beautiful Wednesday
at Changi Airport Terminal 1

we shared a set of breakfast. keeping for Penang's delicacies.

Once we landed in Penang International airport, we bought the pre-paid card (I brought an extra phone) before we exit. There are 2 stalls around. I think the one we bought was RM26 for 5 days usage with 4G. It's good for map reading, especially great for "ubering" too.

We will be spending our first night on Star Libra cruise ship. We need to check-in at 5.30pm at Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal. It is near to Weld Quay Bus Terminal. We have slightly more than 5 hours today.

We planned to do Penang hill today so that the other two days we could cover George town. The taxi fare was RM45 and uber was RM24 (but need to wait 45 minutes). I changed the plan and visit the places near Weld instead. A taxi offered us RM30 but we took bus401 (or 401E) directly to Weld(jetty). It took about 50 minutes and RM6 (should be RM5.20 but no change given) We enjoyed the bus ride. It's pretty comfortable. ( when you exit, turn left to see the bus-stop)

Jetty

deliciously fried.

Goreng Pisang very delicious.  RM1 (fried banana fritters)
I think salt is added. It is a little saltish but it totally enhanced the fritters especially when they are hot.. I had more. Yummilicious!!!

This alley is just beside the Weld (jetty). On the left hand side if you face the main road. There are many food stalls here.
(there is a overhead bridge)

We continued on the left side along the main road to arrive the Chew Jetty , about 5 mins ( after the Shell kiosk)

We crossed over to CF foodcourt to have our lunch. There were many selections. We selected 2 items.
CF foodcourt

We thought a thai mango salad would be a good choice to spice up our appetite, but we were quite disappointed. It's too watery and the taste wasn't too good either. Both of us didn't enjoyed it. :((

delicious!

I don't enjoy ""(a kind of fermented beanpaste), but since Ja is excited, no harm trying. The chicken wasn't too much of the " "smell,  freshly fried, so hot and delicious. without the chillie sauce, it is good enough. Thumbs up. :))

Walked to the other end of the foodcourt and cross the road.

The nutmeg drink is good, very quenching on a hot day. It is not in the drink list, but it has a picture on the wall. We ordered the mixed fishballs, average. The plate of "lor bak" was really delicious, best of all that I had tried in Penang. (even better than my neighbour's, hee....)
My neighbour is from Penang, her mum, Pauline made very delicious loh bak. hmmmmm... I miss chatting with Pauline and her Loh bak too......

in the centre of the cross road

This time we crossed back (diagoally), and strolled along the road back to Chew Jetty. There were more food along this road, but we could only shared a cup of durian ice-cream.

This is  Lebuh Armenian. In fact , along this street there are many street arts too.

freshly baked

we buy our durian ice cream here

Remember the neatly row lanterns, we are at Chew Jetty!!! Just before the entrance, there is a stall selling prawn noodles, I think, smells really good. and another stall selling durian ice-cream too.

We bought some books from here. We asked her permission to take photo and she post for me. I showed her the photo ,she looked and gave a sweet smile.

Penang style

love this tiny sewing mach

some has bigger gaps, but it's fine

pandan rose bouquet

Along the whole street in Chew Jetty, almost every home is selling something. very touristy. The  locals are friendly and don't paster us to buy. It's quite comfortable strolling here. After we exceed, we walked further down to another clan, which is much much quietier.

so many dogs here, funny they don't bark at all

love these railings

fire engine along the road, ready at any time

need this to quench our thirst

overhead bridge, wooden stairs
We walked back to Weld and crossed the overhead bridge to go Lebuh Pantai. This is where I always we bought Ghee Hiang pastries. My kids only enjoy their favourite here. (I tried buying a different brand and unpacked, and they could tell the difference in a single bite!) A few shops down the road is where I would buy my sewing needs too, and a few more down is where I would buy my favourite curry powder. This shop sells "Teh allia" (ginger tea). Just tell them what you want to cook, chicken, beef, mutton or fish they have it all.

omg! wonderfood is here! along the same stretch
We have not enough time today. We'll be back!!

on our way to Swettenham Pier

Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal

on board, Star Libra

my selfie works and fail sometimes!

sunset view thru the net

We had our dinner on board and enjoy the sails off. In the night, we had some drinks and pizza and listen to some live music. There aren't many of us. We thought we could have skipped the cruise and spent more time in Penang to explore.

I slept well after a fullfilling day. Looking forward to day 2.
